Watseka & Elmer Wed at The Mackey House

I am so excited to share this Wedding! I’ve known Watseka and Elmer for about a year. We first met last Fall for their engagement portraits and ever since then I’ve been looking forward to their wedding day. They are the sweetest couple and just so fun to be around! They chose the Mackey House as their wedding venue and the weather was perfect. There was even a breeze which made it ideal weather for celebrating and taking photos.  We began at The Mackey House with getting ready photos in the bridal room and then the couple decided to have a first look at the entrance to the Mackey House Property. They chose their meeting place under a magnificent live oak tree that was at least 100 years old. Their first look and wedding ceremony were beautiful. I am sure they will reflect on this day with the happiest of memories. We were so honored to be involved in their day–Congratulations and best of wishes to them!Mackey House Savannah Wedding Photographer_-18Mackey House Savannah Wedding Photographer_-31

About Us: Elmer and I had been together for 7 years before we got married. We met online and we were friends for a couple of years before we met in person. We were in a long distance relationship for a year while I finished school in Kentucky before moving Augusta, GA in 2008. We are both in the medical field. Elmer is currently working on his second bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, and I have a bachelor’s degree in Health Science with a certificate in MRI.

What made you select Savannah and The Mackey House as your Ceremony & Reception location? Savannah was the first trip we took together as a couple and I immediately fell in love with the beauty and history of the town. I have a thing for old trees and the spanish moss drifting from the oaks that line the streets and squares of Savannah is just so romantic and peaceful to me. It’s one of our favorite places to visit. The Mackey House appealed to me because it was an all-inclusive venue. I never wanted to sit and plan out every single little detail of the wedding so a place that could do it all for you is what I was after. I found them online through savannahido.com and set up an appointment to tour the place in September of 2013. We fell in love with the venue the second we saw the house appear from the long driveway. It is beautifully manicured and landscaped and the staff is amazingly helpful.

What are some of your favorite local Savannah places that you recommend? When we visit Savannah we always take a day and walk the beautiful streets and squares downtown. It’s always full of locals and tourists, but there are so many little shops and cafe’s hiding in the corners that I feel like I find a new place to love every time we visit. This time around we found a cute and cozy cafe called the Firefly Café off of Troup square – we enjoyed everything we ordered from their small, but carefully selected menu. We also visited the Pirates House for the first time. Their pecan-crusted chicken is famous for a reason! And we also found a new lunch favorite called Zunzi’s, a South African themed restaurant. (Their boerewors on a roll is amazing). Lastly, the ghost tours are always fun and Tybee Island beach is just a short drive away.

Where did you get the inspiration/ideas for the details? After we got engaged I started spending most of my spare time browsing sites like Pinterest and Etsy. I wanted to keep my wedding colors simple and elegant so I went with pewter gray and yellow. When I found my dress it had light peach accents on the embroidered flowers so we decided to add peach to my wedding colors as well. Most of my ideas stemmed from something I saw on those sites with a few modifications to add our own personal touches.

Do you have any advice to other couples who are in the process of planning their wedding? What was your favorite resource for planning? My favorite resource was definitely Etsy first and Pinterest second. There are so many unique little items that I found for just about every aspect of the wedding. My advice to those planning would be to decide on what aspects of your wedding are most important to you as a couple. For us it was location and photography, so we made sure to put those things first. We weren’t extravagant with anything else, but we didn’t compromise either. Also, find yourselves a good wedding timeline (I knew we were going to take at least a year) and stick to it. It helped guide me through everything. And keep lists! I’m pretty organized so I kept a list of everything I could think of that I needed to do or buy and just crossed off things as I progressed. I can honestly say it was fun for me, not stressful!

Approximate planning time for wedding: About a year
Approximate # of Guests: 90-95
Wedding Gown: The designer is Elynore Paige, it was bought at a consignment shop in Cincinnati, OH.
Shoes: The Dessy Group (online)
Hair: Heather Ferguson, www.beyondbeautifulbyheather.com She was so amazing! I highly recommend her for any bridal party!
Makeup: Heather Ferguson, www.beyondbeautifulbyheather.com
Bride’s Jewelry: Earrings from Etsy, Pearl Necklace: something borrowed, they belong to my Aunt Rita
Bridesmaid’s Dresses: David’s Bridal
Bridesmaid’s Dresses/Accessories/Jewelry: Jewelry sets came from Etsy
Groom’s attire: David’s Bridal
Ties: Canary Yellow, David’s Bridal
Groomsmen’s attire: David’s Bridal
Officiant: Robert Poston, from the Mackey House
Ceremony Music: 1000 Years Instrumental Version (Christina Perri)

Cocktail Hour Music: Mix of songs provided by DJ – DJ or Band: Dave Gibson, from the Mackey House. He was so amazing, we cannot recommend him enough!

Florist: David Jackson (Carpe Diem) as recommended by the Mackey House. I showed David pictures of what I liked and he was able to create flower arrangements that were perfect and beautiful. I didn’t even have a specific type of flower I wanted so he had full creative-reign and I loved what he did!

Caterer: Magnolia Grill Catering, as recommended by the Mackey House. Mark and Corie are so laid-back and love what they do! They were willing to create anything we wanted, but we just chose one of their menus from their suggestions (with a few modifications) and everything was so delicious! We highly recommend the flaming doughnuts for dessert! Elmer opted for those instead of a groom’s cake! We received so many compliments on the food.

Wedding Cake: Baker’s Pride, Savannah, Ga. We ended up having two taste testings and the staff was so nice and helpful. I had specific ideas for the cake, I wanted the piping detail to match the vine-detailing on my dress and Trisha, the owner, was more than willing to create whatever I had in mind. We also chose three different flavors for the tiers because everything was so good it was hard to choose just one! Our cake topper was custom made from a shop on Etsy. It had all of our wedding details and specific details about our four-legged children! It all came out perfect!

Transportation/Trolley/Pedicab/ Limousine: We left in a classic Rolls Royce Bentley! It was a service the Mackey House offered and it felt so fancy!

Rehearsal Dinner: Our rehearsal was downtown at the Moon River Brewing Company. They have a downstairs cellar that accommodated about 35-40 in our party. The cellar area was beautifully decorated and the food was perfectly delicious.
